Why Pro-Palestine Speech Keeps Costing Careers Even as Actual Antisemites Sell Out Stadiums
Macklemore’s official removal from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour is not a one-off scandal. It’s the moment an open secret became impossible to deny. For all our lives, an unspoken rule has governed American politics, business, and entertainment: criticize Israel or voice support for Palestinians, and you risk your career – even when no reasonable reading of your comments involves hatred of Jewish people. Some of the largest names in Hollywood have absorbed versions of this penalty quietly, from actors like Susan Sarandon and Mark Ruffalo to executives like Maha Dakhil. Historically, this has been waved off as paranoia about shadowy forces - the deep state, the corporatocracy, the lobby nobody can quite locate. In this case, Macklemore has presented a billionaire stadium owner’s name and described the mechanism. On top of that, Kraft didn’t just apply the mechanism, he confirmed it in his own words, shifting this from an open secret to an undeniable fact.
On September 4th, Macklemore opened for Ed Sheeran at MetLife stadium shouting “Free Palestine” before performing his single “Hind’s Hall” titled in honor of Hind Rajab – a five year-old Palestinian girl murdered alongside her entire family by the Israeli Occupational Forces after being shot 335 times. Macklemore stressed that his “message is for peace, love, for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect and equality” while speaking directly to the Jewish fans in the audience, he emphasized that “criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide, in no way is a criticism of you”. Despite Macklemore’s assurances, on September 14th, Messina Touring Group, Ed Sheeran’s tour promoter, announced that venues won’t host a Macklemore/Sheeran show and pulled the rapper from the remaining U.S. dates due to pressure from Stadium owner Robert Kraft. Kraft himself confirmed that he personally barred Macklemore from Gillette Stadium – where the tour is scheduled next – citing the Sept. 4-5 performance and a “broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery” (Al Jazeera).
In his Instagram statement breaking the news, Macklemore states that Kraft not only barred him from Gillette, but “rallied” other stadium owners into a collective ultimatum – if the rapper stays on the tour, no venue plays it (NBC News). The list of venues that reportedly refused to host the tour include Gillette Stadium (Foxborough), Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia), Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta), Lucas Oil Stadium (Indianapolis), Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte), AT&T Stadium (Arlington), and Raymond James Stadium (Tampa). While Kraft has told Variety he “would welcome the opportunity to sit down with Macklemore” and that the goal is “peace for all people”, that statement is hiding a much more sinister truth. Whose peace is really being protected?
Macklemore addressed the issue head on: “he [Sheeran] told me the words ‘Free Palestine’ and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with”. It can be inferred that the people in question are tour managers, venue owners, and others in the entertainment industry. Macklemore went on to say that “taking a side can cost you. Money, brand deals, sponsorships, festivals, private shows, relationships, access. I’ve lost all of those things.” He explained that his performances received “loud, undeniable support for Palestinian liberation” from the audience that might encourage more artists to speak out in favor of the cause. The growing momentum of resistance may have been the reason “it became so important to silence me” he reflected “And one of the most effective ways to enforce that silence has been to weaponize the accusation of antisemitism… When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying ‘Free Palestine’ gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn’t protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.” It’s no secret that Robert Kraft has sympathies towards Israel. In fact, the Kraft website advertises “the Kraft family has maintained a strong connection to Israel” and is among AIPAC’s largest donors, having given nearly $30 million in total to the pro-Israel super PAC. So it makes sense that any criticism of the Israeli state is met with immediate action from the Kraft family.
However, this didn’t start with Macklemore, nor is Robert Kraft alone; this is a part of the pattern Macklemore is naming. In October 2023, Maha Dakhil was co-chair of CAA’s Motion Pictures department and sat on the agency’s internal board – one of the most powerful agents in Hollywood, repping Tom Cruise, Nataltie Portman, and Madonna – and had recently been named one of the most powerful women in entertainment. On October 18th, 2023, she reposted an Instagram Story from an account called “Free Palestine” that read “you’re currently learning who supports genocide”. Within 48 hours of the post circulating, Dakhil had issued an apology, resigned from CAA’s internal agency board and stepped away from co-leading the Motion Pictures department – CAA’s most powerful creative division. She was permitted to keep working with clients, but lost her institutional power inside the agency. Dakhil’s apology statement included “I made a mistake with a repost in my Instagram story, which used hurtful language… I’m so grateful to Jewish friends and colleagues who pointed out the implications and further educated me”. If that weren’t humiliating enough, the Variety report breaking the news at the time even included that Maha would be “spending time in her personal education process on the conflict between Israel and Hamas”. CAA’s positioning was clear from the start. They had put out a we “stand with the people of Israel” post days after the events of October 7th, so it was clear Maha had stepped outside the established institutional lines.
What followed was the exit of Aaron Sorkin – one of CAA’s top writers, repped by Dakhil for six years – publicly dropping the agency saying: “Maha isn’t an antisemite, she’s just wrong”. While Sorkin – whose support for Israel is no secret – did not label Dakhil antisemitic, it was clear his departure was over her “controversial” posts, though both the UN and Human Rights Watch have since backed Dakhil’s position that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza. Dakhil was an industry insider, someone who decides who gets booked, and she still wasn’t insulated. If anything, her proximity to power made the response faster.
So began the antisemitism charges.
In November 2023, Susan Sarandon was dropped by the United Talent Agency after pro-Palestine rally remarks. At the same time, Melissa Barrera was cut from Scream VII by Spyglass Media for calling out what is happening in Gaza as “genocide and ethnic cleansing”. In 2025, Children’s YouTube educator Ms. Rachel was targeted by watchdog group StopAntisemitism, which called on the DOJ to investigate her under FARA for posting about starving children in Gaza, even landing her on their list for “Antisemite of the Year”. Lastly, in late 2026, Mark Ruffalo was accused of “antisemitic tropes” by Paramount after linking the Paramount–Warner Bros. merger to Larry Ellison’s Oracle and its ties to the Israeli military. More than 180 Jewish entertainment figures have since signed an open letter calling the accusation “a false and dangerous weaponization” of antisemitism charges. Palestinian historian Zachary Foster called the standard applied to Israel “a totally nonsensical, irrational double standard” (Al Jazeera). It is apparent that across industries and platforms, the script remains the same: any sympathies voiced towards Palestinians can cost contracts, agencies, or even careers.
Although a pro-Palestine stance is a quick and easy way to get yourself cancelled, as it turns out, true antisemitism doesn’t have quite the same impact. In May 2025, Kanye West released his single “Heil Hitler”, which included a lengthy sample from the German dictator. West then sold swastika merchandise, and repeatedly declared “I am a Nazi” on his verified X account. West lost his talent agency and was banned from Australia due to his antisemitism, but roughly a year later, he played a sold-out comeback show to 70,000 fans at SoFi stadium Los Angeles. Not only that, West has performed at Raymond James Stadium on June 26th and 28th this year and is still scheduled to play at AT&T Stadium in November this year – both venues that have refused to host Macklemore for saying “Free Palestine”.
When a real, explicit Nazi sympathizer can headline sold-out stadiums a year after “Heil Hitler,” while performers saying “Free Palestine” or “genocide” get removed from tours and franchises overnight, it’s clear the charge of antisemitism is being selectively enforced. The “antisemitism” accusation is now deployed against what is deemed as “political speech” far more reliably than against actual hate speech. Macklemore, Mark Ruffalo, and 180+ Jewish defenders make this point independently: overusing the allegation as a political weapon erodes its power to protect Jewish people when it’s genuinely needed.
This is no longer a conspiracy we’re trying to untangle. While Ed Sheeran wanted to use his voice to address that his silence is being “not complicit”, all four of his opening and support acts – including his own band – have now dropped out in solidarity with Macklemore. Aaron Rowe’s statement included not wanting billionaires to use “their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up against Israeli genocide”; Finneas stated “artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed”; Lukas Graham said “we should be able to speak about war, about civilians being killed”; and Beoga Music cited not wanting to “play in venues that silence anyone advocating for Free Palestine” and that “the real enemy is the Zionist lobby”. All four artists shared support for the Palestinian people and their liberation. Macklemore’s peers have come out in solidarity, named the Zionist lobby as a force threatening free speech against support for Palestine, and flipped the script for maybe the first time.
Macklemore isn’t the first artist to lose work over Palestine, but he may be the first to make the mechanism itself the story. His removal forces a public reckoning with who decides what counts as antisemitism, who benefits from that definition, and who pays the price when it’s misapplied. “There is no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed”, as Macklemore himself put it, he is not the victim in this story. Neither is Ed Sheeran. The victims are the tens of thousands of Palestinian men, women, and children killed every day – a distinction that often gets blurred in the silencing of their defenders. Thank you, Ben and all who have spoken up, for giving a voice to the voiceless, even at a time when you were under attack.
